Jerusalem, 23 August, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Bassel Al-Asmar has been in prison since February 20, 2002, serving a life sentence for the assassination of Israeli Tourism Minister Rehavam Ze’evi. On Saturday, his wife gave birth to twins after, according to family members, conceiving through IVF using her imprisoned husband’s smuggled, frozen sperm.
The wife, Sanabel Al-Rai, a resident of Qalqilya, in Samaria, tried for two years to become pregnant, according to the same family members.
The assassination of Ze’evi took place during the Second Intifada, on October 17, 2001, at 7:00 a.m. at the Hyatt Hotel in Jerusalem. It was carried out by a Palestinian assassination squad belonging to the terrorist organization Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). Ze’evi was the first and, to date, only Israeli minister to be assassinated by Palestinian terrorists.
