Colombia Resumes Coal Exports to Israel, Reversing Petro-Era Restriction
Colombia has resumed coal exports to Israel, a move agreed upon by Foreign Ministers Sa’ar and Bula, reversing a 2024 restriction.
Jerusalem, 23 August, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Colombia announced the resumption of coal exports to Israel following the signing of a decree by Colombian President Abelardo De La Espriella permitting the renewal of trade in the sector between the two countries.
The decision was agreed upon during a meeting between Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar and Colombian Foreign Minister Bula last July in Washington.
The move joins a series of developments in Israel-Colombia relations, including Colombia’s recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, the relocation of the Colombian Embassy to Jerusalem, its withdrawal from South Africa’s case against Israel at the ICJ, mutual visa waivers, and additional steps to deepen ties between the two countries.
The decision reverses a restriction imposed in August 2024 by Colombia’s previous president, Gustavo Petro.
