Israel Holds 16th Annual Reading Month

Israel launches its 16th annual Reading Month in June, offering free cultural events, writer meetings, and family activities across the country to celebrate.

Jerusalem, 3 June, 2026 (TPS-IL) — With the support of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, Israel’s 16th annual Reading Month is underway, which will run through the month of June and will include a wide variety of cultural events, writer’s meetings, story hours, and community events across the country.

Throughout the month, many diverse events will be held free of charge throughout the country, where the general public will be able to encounter the best of Israeli creation.

As part of the events, public libraries, community centers, and youth centers will host meetings with writers, creators, musicians, and intellectuals, writing workshops, activities for the whole family, plays, story times for children, and community meetings with the aim of celebrating the world of books.

“Public libraries constitute social resilience and a significant community space, alongside the home and the workplace or school, and operate year-round as a cultural, social and educational center for children, youth, families, senior citizens and all residents of cities and towns,” said the Ministry.

The Ministry’s data shows that public libraries play a significant role in public life: in recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in the volume of book requests – from about 6.7 million in 2021 to about 12.8 million in 2024-2025. This figure reflects the public’s increasing use of libraries and the growing demand for reading.
