Deal Reached to Ensure Ultra-Orthodox Schoolchildren can Engage in Remote Learning During Iran War In Spite of Not Having Home Internet

During the Iran war, cellular companies will provide free remote learning access for ultra-Orthodox students, preventing extra costs for families.

Jerusalem, 25 March, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Due to the war with Iran and Iranian missile attacks, schools are closed and classes are being held through remote learning. However, Haredi (ultra-orthodox) Israelis do not use smart phones with open internet connections for religious reasons and so they have no internet plans, including home internet connections t connect their phone to with wi-fi.

So, in order to “ensure the continuation of studies for students from the Haredi public without fear of excessive financial expenses and in response to public inquiries received on the subject,” the Ministry of Communications reported that the cellular companies – Cellcom, Partner, Pelephone, Hot Mobile, Viacom Mobile and Rami Levy – have informed the Ministry that they will provide a “tailored response” for remote learners, so that no additional payment will be charged for exceeding the monthly cellular package resulting from calls to the learning lines.

The move was made possible by, among other things, the reduction of interconnection fees to zero in June 2025 (during the previous Iran conflict), so that companies are no longer required to pay for connecting calls between networks – which provides significant relief for the user community.

The Ministry of Communications said it will “continue to work to ensure available, fair, and continuous communications services even in times of emergency.”
