Contaminated Soil Found at Sde Dov in Tel Aviv

PFAS contamination found in Tel Aviv's Sde Dov soil and groundwater, prompting expanded investigations by the Environmental Protection Ministry and Israel Land.

Disasters

Jerusalem, 4 February, 2026 (TPS-IL) — The Ministry of Environmental Protection and the Israel Land Authority announced there were initial findings of contamination with PFAS (forever chemicals) compounds in the soil and groundwater in the Sde Dov area in Tel Aviv.

Following the findings, the ministry and the Ministry of environment and Natural Resources are working to professionally manage the risk, including expanding ground investigations and examining the impact of the pollution on the coast and the sea – all with the aim of protecting public health and the environment.

The site served as a military and civilian airport for decades. In the years 2020-2023, it underwent a soil investigation and remediation process. The process was approved by the ministry according to the professional requirements for soil investigation and remediation that were in effect at the time. It should be noted that at that time, the ministry did not have a binding policy regarding PFAS contaminants in soils, and therefore these substances were not tested or treated as part of the soil remediation project at Sde Dov.
