Haifa is one of the easiest Israeli cities to reach without a car and one of the least walkable once you are standing in it. The coastal railway runs straight through the middle of it, and on Thursday 13 August 2026 the Ministry of Transport timetable feed listed 85 direct trains from Tel Aviv Savidor Center to Haifa Merkaz HaShmona, taking 64 to 70 minutes, plus 59 more that ran through from Ben Gurion Airport in 82 to 90. The station is beside the port, five minutes' walk from the bottom of the Bahai terraces.

The difficulty is vertical. The city is stacked in three tiers up the north face of Mount Carmel, and the funicular that joins them climbs 274 metres inside a tunnel 1.8 km long. The gardens have three entrances at three different heights: the balcony at 61 Yefe Nof near the ridge, the main entrance at 80 Hatzionut halfway up, and the German Colony plaza at 21 Hagefen at the bottom. Which train station you get off at, and which bus you take afterwards, depends entirely on which of the three you are aiming for.

The third thing to settle before booking is the weekend. Intercity public transport in Israel largely stops from Friday afternoon until Saturday night, and the railway is the strictest about it: on Friday 7 August 2026 the last train out of Haifa Merkaz HaShmona that ran through to Tel Aviv left at 12:56. Inside Haifa the picture is different, because this is the one large Israeli city whose own buses keep running on Saturday.

The catch. Shabbat closes this route, and earlier than the timetable in your head. On Friday 7 August 2026 the last train out of Haifa Merkaz HaShmona that ran through to Tel Aviv Savidor Center left at 12:56, and the last train of any kind to call at the station did so at 16:48. 2. 2At the Haifa South interchange, choose: the seafront road through Bat Galim and past the port for the German Colony and the downtown, or the Carmel Tunnels for the bay, the Krayot and Akko.
3. 3The tunnels are tolled. The operator's published price for a private car was ₪11.97 as updated on 1 July 2026, paid at the booth or billed automatically to a registered number plate.
4. 4For the gardens, park at whichever entrance you intend to start from. The Bahai Gardens' own visitor page lists street parking at all three, with designated accessible bays and no car park of its own.
5. 5Plan the walk before you park. The terraces are descended, not climbed, so a car left at the balcony on Yefe Nof is at the wrong end of the morning.
The catch. Street parking on the Carmel ridge is residential parking, competing with residents, and the operator does not publish a visitor car park at any of the three gates. The three tiers of the city are also further apart by road than they look on a map: the tunnels exist because the surface route from Haifa South to the Checkpost interchange used to take 30 to 50 minutes.

Jerusalem to Haifa

4. 4Get off at the terminus, Merkazit HaMifratz. This is an interchange in the industrial bay, not the tourist city, and it shares its site with Lev HaMifratz railway station.

The catch. Line 960 does not put you in Haifa. It ends beside the refineries in the bay, and the Bahai terraces are a further ride away. Friday service was 18 departures with the last at 16:40 on 7 August 2026, and Saturday six, none before 20:45.

Jerusalem to Haifa

1. 1Take a northbound train from Jerusalem Yitzhak Navon, the deep station beside the International Convention Centre. 40 ran to Tel Aviv on Thursday 13 August 2026, half-hourly at nine and thirty-nine minutes past the hour.
2. 2The run to Tel Aviv Savidor Center took 35 to 46 minutes, calling at Ben Gurion Airport, Tel Aviv HaHagana and HaShalom on the way.
3. 3Change at Savidor Center. There is no through train: in that timetable, Yitzhak Navon services terminated at Modiin, Herzliya or Tel Aviv Merkaz.
4. 4Take a northbound coastal train to Haifa Merkaz HaShmona, 64 to 70 minutes. The 09:09 from Navon reached Savidor at 09:50 and connected into the 09:56, arriving 11:00.
5. 5Walk down to the German Colony plaza, or get off a stop early at Bat Galim for Egged line 136 to the gardens' main entrance.
The catch. The change is the whole risk in this route: the neat connections leave six minutes on the platform at Savidor Center, and missing one costs about half an hour. Jerusalem sits close to a fare boundary, roughly 117 kilometres from Haifa in a straight line against a band edge at 120, so check the price the machine actually quotes rather than assuming.

Akko to Haifa

2. 2Take a southbound train. 69 ran through to Haifa Merkaz HaShmona on Thursday 13 August 2026, the first at 00:01 and the last at 22:52.
3. 3The run took 22 to 32 minutes depending on the service, because some call at Kiryat Motzkin, Kiryat Haim, Hutzot HaMifratz and Lev HaMifratz and some do not.

5. 5For the gardens' main entrance, stay on one further stop to Bat Galim and take Egged line 136 up Hatzionut.
The catch. Saturday is the problem in both directions. The railway does not run, and Nateev Express line 271, the bus that links Nahariya and Akko to Haifa, called at Akko's central bus station at 03:27 on Saturday 8 August 2026 and then not again until 16:32. A Saturday day trip between the two cities is a taxi.

The car

The one Israeli city where the train beats the hire car

For Haifa itself, a car is the weaker option. The railway lands in the city centre rather than on a bypass, the funicular and the buses do the climbing, and the streets that matter to a visitor are a one-way descent through a garden rather than anything you would drive. The Bahai Gardens' own visitor page lists street parking at all three entrances, with designated accessible bays: street parking on a residential ridge road, not a car park with a barrier and a ticket machine.

There is also a shape problem that catches drivers out. The terraces are walked downhill, from the balcony at the top to the German Colony at the bottom, which means a car left at 61 Yefe Nof finishes the morning nineteen terraces above its owner. The three tiers of the city are far apart by road even though they are close in plan: the Carmel Tunnels were built precisely because the surface run from the Haifa South interchange to the Checkpost interchange used to take 30 to 50 minutes, and the tunnels cut it to six. They opened on 1 December 2010 and they are tolled, at ₪11.97 for a private car in the price list the operator updated on 1 July 2026.

What a car does buy is everything outside the city: the Druze villages along the ridge, Ein Hod, the Carmel forest roads and the beaches south towards Atlit, all of them awkward on buses and some of them unreachable at the weekend. The practical answer is to arrive by train, spend the Haifa days on the Rav-Kav, and pick the car up on the morning you leave rather than the morning you arrive.

The system

One card, five distance bands, and a Friday that ends at lunchtime

Everything except a taxi runs on the Rav-Kav, the national smart card. It works on Israel Railways, on every bus operator in the north, and on the Carmelit. Buy one at a station ticket office, load a cash balance or a pass onto it, and validate it on boarding.

Since the Derekh Shava reform, fares are set by straight-line distance rather than by route, in bands of 15, 40, 75, 120 and 225 kilometres. In the table Rav-Kav Online published for the July 2024 update, a single bus journey costs ₪6 in the shortest band, ₪12.50 in the 15 to 40 band and ₪17 in both the 40 to 75 and 75 to 120 bands; a single train journey costs ₪9.50, ₪19, ₪25 and ₪28.50 across the same steps. A combined bus and train daily pass is ₪19 in the shortest band and ₪44 in the 75 to 120 band. Tel Aviv Savidor Center is about 84 kilometres from Haifa Merkaz HaShmona in a straight line and Ben Gurion Airport about 92, which puts both in that 75 to 120 band. Akko is about 14 kilometres away, inside the shortest one.

The Friday shutdown is earlier than most visitors expect and it is not the same everywhere. On Friday 7 August 2026 the feed showed 67 train calls at Haifa Merkaz HaShmona against 326 on the Thursday, the last through service to Tel Aviv leaving at 12:56 and the last train of any kind calling at 16:48. Egged's line 960 from Jerusalem ran 18 times that Friday, the last at 16:40. Nothing came back on the railway until 21:48 on the Saturday evening, and the first train from Haifa to Savidor Center after that was 22:07.

One weekend line is worth knowing about because it exists only when the railway does not. Egged line 909, Tel Aviv Central Bus Station to Nahariya, called at Merkazit HaMifratz 82 times on Friday 7 August 2026 and 49 times on Saturday 8 August, and not once on the Thursday. On a Friday afternoon, after the last train has gone, that is the bus.

The exception

Haifa keeps its buses running on Saturday

The Carmelit's operator states it plainly on its own site: unlike other cities, public transport in Haifa operates on Saturdays too, with selected bus lines serving residents and visitors. The Metronit, the articulated bus rapid transit network that opened on 16 August 2013 and has been run by Superbus since October 2021, keeps two of its lines going through the weekend, Friday nights included.

The timetable feed bears that out. At the German Colony Metronit stop on Saturday 8 August 2026, line 1 called 35 times between 03:17 and 16:37 on its night and Shabbat working, then 33 more times between 16:55 and 23:55 on the standard one, and line 5א filled the middle of the day with 32 calls between 07:20 and 19:40. At the Gan HaBahaim stop beside the gardens' main entrance, Egged line 25 ran half-hourly from 09:41 and line 23 from 10:13; lines 115 and 136 rejoined them from 16:32 and 16:53.

The Carmelit itself does not run through Shabbat. Its operator publishes hours of 06:00 to midnight Sunday to Thursday, 06:00 to 15:00 on Friday and holiday eves, and 20:00 to midnight on Saturday, and the feed for those two dates matched: the last Friday run left at 15:12 and the Saturday service began at 20:00 and ended at 23:57.

The distinction that matters is between moving inside Haifa and getting to it. A Saturday in Haifa with no car is perfectly workable. A Saturday arrival from Tel Aviv or Jerusalem, on public transport, mostly is not.

On arrival

Which station, which entrance, and the 274 metres in between

Haifa has several stations on the same line and they are not interchangeable. Haifa Merkaz HaShmona, beside the port and the cruise terminal, is the one for the German Colony: the plaza at 21 Hagefen is about 545 metres away in a straight line, roughly ten minutes on foot. Bat Galim, one stop to the west, is the one for the gardens' main entrance, because Egged line 136 climbs from the station forecourt to the Gan HaBahaim stop on Hatzionut in 11 to 12 minutes, 55 times on Thursday 13 August 2026, first at 05:30 and last at 23:15. Hof HaCarmel, two stops south, is the one for the Carmel ridge and for intercity coaches: its bus terminal sits about 120 metres from the platforms, and Egged line 115 runs from it to the same Gan HaBahaim stop in 22 minutes, 81 times that Thursday, as often as every twelve minutes through the morning.

The Carmelit is the shortcut between the tiers rather than a way into the city. Six stations run from Ir Hatahtit downtown, about 600 metres from Haifa Merkaz HaShmona station, up through Hadar Ha'iriya, HaNevi'im, Masada and Bnei Zion Hospital to Merkaz HaCarmel on the ridge, which is about 550 metres from the balcony at 61 Yefe Nof. The feed for Thursday 13 August 2026 gave 87 runs in each direction, one every twelve minutes from 06:00 to 23:45, and twelve minutes end to end. The operator's own page claims less than eight minutes between the top and bottom stations, so treat the published journey time as the outer figure. The same page uses the older station names, Gan Ha'em and Paris Square, for what the timetables now call Merkaz HaCarmel and Ir Hatahtit.

Across the bay, Metronit line 1 is the spine. It runs from Merkazit HaKrayot in Kiryat Motzkin down to Hof HaCarmel central station, calling at Merkazit HaMifratz, the German Colony, Ben Gurion Avenue, Haifa Merkaz HaShmona station and the Carmelit on the way, and it took 16 minutes from Hof HaCarmel to the German Colony stop on Thursday 13 August 2026, with 156 calls there between 05:15 and 23:55. If an intercity coach has dumped you at Merkazit HaMifratz, that is the line to look for, or take the train from Lev HaMifratz two stops into Haifa Merkaz HaShmona in six to nine minutes.

The sensible order for a first day, given the gradient, is to go up by machine and come down on foot: Carmelit or line 136 to the ridge, the balcony at 61 Yefe Nof, then the terraces down to the German Colony, then the train home from Haifa Merkaz HaShmona without climbing anything.

Practical

What to know before you go

Buy and load a Rav-Kav before the first journey. It covers Israel Railways, every bus operator in the north and the Carmelit, and fares are set by straight-line distance band rather than by route.
Pick the station by the entrance you want: Haifa Merkaz HaShmona for the German Colony plaza, Bat Galim for line 136 to the main entrance on Hatzionut, Hof HaCarmel for line 115 and the Carmel ridge.
Go up by machine and come down on foot. The terraces are a descent, so put the Carmelit or the bus at the start of the walk rather than the end of it.
The Carmelit closes for Shabbat even though the buses do not: 06:00 to 15:00 on Friday and holiday eves, and nothing on Saturday until 20:00, per its operator.
If a Friday departure is unavoidable, look for Egged line 909 to Tel Aviv from Merkazit HaMifratz. It runs on Fridays and Saturday nights, when the railway does not.
The bay interchange and the city are not the same place. Intercity coaches from Jerusalem, Tiberias and Afula terminate at Merkazit HaMifratz, which needs a train or a Metronit ride on top.
Dress for the gardens before you board, not at the gate. Shoulders and knees covered is a condition of entry at all three entrances, and there is nowhere to change.
If driving, decide about the Carmel Tunnels before the Haifa South interchange. They are tolled, at ₪11.97 for a private car in the operator's list updated on 1 July 2026, and they bypass the downtown entirely.

Is there a direct train from Jerusalem to Haifa?+
