Sahara Dust Sends Air Pollution High From Tel Aviv to the Negev

Israeli authorities warned of high air pollution across much of the country on Sunday, caused by dust carried in on strong south-westerly winds from North Africa. The warning came jointly from the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Environmental Protection.

According to the two ministries, elevated concentrations of fine respiratory particles were recorded in the Tel Aviv metropolitan area, the Coastal Plain, Jerusalem, Judea, the Negev and other regions, and conditions were expected to deteriorate further on Monday before improving gradually on Tuesday. Sensitive groups (people with heart or lung disease, the elderly, children and pregnant women) were urged to avoid strenuous outdoor activity, and the general public advised to limit exertion.

The same warning, three times in little over two weeks

This was not an isolated event. The Jerusalem Post reported on 30 January 2026 that the same two ministries had warned of high pollution nationwide from the weekend through the following Monday, again attributing it to south-westerly winds carrying dust from North Africa, and directing the public to the Environmental Protection Ministry's monitoring site and its "Air in the Environment" app for live readings.

A week after the warning described here, the pattern peaked. The Times of Israel reported on 14 February 2026 that Jerusalem and Tel Aviv ranked as the most polluted cities in the world that day, with monitoring stations logging a severe fall in air quality from around 3am as Saharan dust arrived, and the monitoring service IQAir placing the two Israeli cities above Almaty, Lahore and Kolkata. Alongside the health advice, officials suggested closing windows and using air purifiers indoors.

What arrives with the wind

Dust reaching Israel from North Africa travels on south-westerly flow across the eastern Mediterranean; dust from the Jordanian and Arabian deserts arrives on south-easterly flow from the opposite direction. Both raise the particulate load that Israel's air quality index measures, and both can be violent as well as hazy. Ynetnews has reported on an Israeli dust storm in which gusts reached about 100km/h, the haze moved north from the western Negev and Gaza-border communities through Tel Aviv, Netanya and Rishon LeZion, and power supplies were knocked out in several southern communities.

Why the ministries name those four groups

The advice always singles out the elderly, children, pregnant women and heart and lung patients, and there is a specific reason. The pollutant that spikes in a dust event is particulate matter, and mineral dust is one of its principal components. The World Health Organization, in a fact sheet dated 24 October 2024, treats particulate matter as the standard proxy indicator for air pollution and attributes deaths from outdoor air pollution overwhelmingly to circulatory and respiratory disease: roughly 68 per cent to ischaemic heart disease and stroke, 14 per cent to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and 14 per cent to acute lower respiratory infections. The WHO describes air pollution as one of the greatest environmental risks to children's health.

For a healthy adult, in other words, a two-day episode is mostly an inconvenience; for someone with existing cardiac or pulmonary disease the same air is a measurable hazard, and the guidance is written for them.

What the warning did not say

The ministries did not publish particulate readings for any specific location, did not rank which of the listed regions was worst affected, and did not impose or recommend any closure of schools, workplaces or sporting events. Nor did they say how long the dust plume itself was expected to remain over the region after air quality improved.
