A new survey shows 82% of Holocaust survivors in Israel are not in good health, facing accessibility barriers to medical services despite ongoing treatment.

Jerusalem, 12 May, 2026 (TPS-IL) — A survey conducted by the Holocaust Survivors’ Rights Authority among Holocaust survivors and Holocaust refugees shows that most of them maintain continuity of medical treatment, feel socially connected, and demonstrate economic independence.

About 82% reported that they were not in good health, which requires ongoing medical attention.

91% of respondents do not give up on medical treatments, those who gave up did so mainly due to operational/bureaucratic difficulties.

Approximately 80% reported that accessibility barriers make it difficult to receive medical services (distance from the place of treatment, long waiting times, and a health condition that makes it difficult to leave the house). However, 66% indicated that they receive home visits by medical staff, and 93% of all respondents are aware of the possibilities of remote medical services.

72% of respondents do not feel lonely, and only 25% of those who do experience some level of loneliness are interested in receiving a solution to alleviate their loneliness.

There is a difference between the population of Holocaust survivors and Holocaust refugees. Among Holocaust survivors, 55% reported having regular social activity, while among Holocaust refugees this rate is lower, at only 32%.

82% are not financially supported by non-profit organizations, and most of them are not interested in assistance. Of the 18% who receive assistance from non-profit organizations, most receive food baskets.

15% do not receive assistance in exercising economic rights and are interested in doing so. According to them, the main reason for not receiving rights lies in the lack of clarity in the eligibility conditions.

About 90% reported that they rely on their family members to exercise their rights.
