Malta Resumes Recognition of Israeli Passports
Malta's Foreign Minister Christopher Fearne has informed Israel that all Israeli travel documents will now be recognized, easing travel for Israelis.
Jerusalem, 19 August, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar on Wednesday announced on X that Malta’s Minister for Foreign and European Affairs, Christopher Fearne, “has informed me that Malta has decided to recognize all Israeli travel documents.”
“This important step will enable all Israelis who wish to travel to beautiful Malta to do so,” Sa’ar noted, adding that “Israel warmly welcomes this decision, and I thank Minister Fearne for his efforts in making it possible.”
Diplomatic relations between Israel and Malta have noticeably cooled over the Gaza war. Malta has frequently voted against Israel at the United Nations General Assembly, and Israeli diplomatic officials have noted that Malta’s political stance created an “unpleasant” and even hostile impression in Israel. In April 2024, Malta supported granting full UN membership to the State of Palestine.
