Israeli police thwarted a stabbing attempt in Lod on Wednesday after a suspect, believed to be an Arab resident of the city, charged at officers with a knife.
Officers from the Lod police station spotted the man holding a knife and ordered him to stop. Instead, the suspect ran toward special patrol unit fighters operating in the area and attempted to stab one of them. An officer opened fire and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
No officers were wounded.
Large forces from the Central District police sealed off the area, collected evidence, and conducted searches to rule out additional threats. Central District Commander Chief Superintendent Amir Cohen was en route to the scene to assess the situation with his forces.
Police said the investigation is in its early stages and that the full circumstances of the attempted terror attack are still being examined
