Jerusalem, 27 May, 2026 (TPS-IL) — A seven-year-old girl was killed on Wednesday after being shot in the town of Arara, prompting Israeli Arabs to denounce the government amid surging homicides.

The child, identified in local reports as Layla Jahja, was evacuated in critical condition to Hillel Yaffe Hospital in Hadera, where doctors later pronounced her dead. Two suspects, including her father, have been arrested in connection with the incident, according to police.

According to Israel Police and the emergency medical service Magen David Adom, the shooting occurred during a dispute that escalated between adults following an argument between children. Initial assessments indicate that parents intervened in the altercation, which then developed into a violent confrontation in which a firearm was discharged. One of the parents allegedly opened fire, striking the girl in the neck.

First responders from Magen David Adom said the child was brought to them unconscious in a private vehicle near the Karkur Junction, where medics immediately began resuscitation efforts.

“We contacted the girl who was brought to us in a private vehicle while she was unconscious and suffering from a penetrating injury. We performed CPR on her, including stopping the bleeding, massages, and breathing, and evacuated her to the hospital in critical condition,” Magen David Adom paramedics Chava Superfin and Yarin Harbi said.

Police said several suspects were detained, including the girl’s father.

Civic organizations reacted sharply to the killing.

The Abraham Initiatives, a non-profit organization that promotes Arab integration into Israeli society, said, “A 7-year-old girl was shot to death in broad daylight in the State of Israel, under the auspices of the Israeli government’s neglect. The heart cannot stand the tragedy that the neglect of Arab society creates. This shocking case is a watershed.”

According to Abraham Initiatives data, 116 people have been Killed In Arab society since the beginning of 2026, most of them in shootings.

Rola Daoud, co-national director of Standing Together, which promotes coexistence, said, “The heart breaks over a 7-year-old girl who was murdered as a result of the negligence of the government of death. While [National Security Minister Itamar] Ben-Gvir is taking pictures in our villages and towns, we have already counted over a hundred murders in Arab society in about six months. This is not culture, it is the result of policy.”

The surging violence is widely attributed to organized crime groups engaged in turf wars and efforts to eliminate rivals. Arab criminal organizations have been involved in extortion, money laundering, and the trafficking of weapons, drugs, and women.

Critics argue the Crime Wave has worsened since Itamar Ben-Gvir, a far-right politician, became National Security Minister in 2022.
