Plan to Make Be’er Sheva ‘Core City’ of the South Approved

Israel approves plan to make Be’er Sheva a 'core city' of the south with major transportation initiatives, including high-speed rail and light rail systems.

Jerusalem, 9 November, 2025 (TPS-IL) — The government of Israel approved a plan for a large-scale transportation initiative that the Ministry of Transport and Road Safety said constitutes a “leap forward in transportation infrastructure in Be’er Sheva,” and to make it a the “core city” of the south. The plan includes a series of flagship projects that position Be’er Sheva as a connected and advanced metropolitan city.

Among the approved moves is the promotion of high-speed rail to Beersheba, including budgeting for the completion of detailed planning and expropriations, as well as the establishment of a light rail system (LRT) within the city of Beersheba, as part of a long-term strategic project and the promotion of detailed planning of interchanges and central traffic routes, including the Negev Brigade interchange, the Highway 40 and Highway 25 interchanges, and the regulation of accessibility to the Shimon Peres Medical Center.
