Woman Shot Dead at Home in Abu Snan as Arab Death Toll Hits 149

A 35-year-old woman was found shot dead overnight in her home in Abu Snan, an Arab town in northern Israel, the Israel Police said on Tuesday. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene. The victim, identified in Hebrew-language media as Sherihan Mishleb, was a divorced mother of three. Her children were not in the house when she was killed.

Police said the motive was “likely criminal”. Her body was discovered by her brother, who alerted the authorities, according to the account given at the time, and eight of her relatives, among them her former husband, were detained for questioning. The Abraham Initiatives, a non-profit organisation that promotes Arab integration into Israeli society and keeps a running count of violent deaths, recorded the killing as the 149th in the Arab community that year.

Where Abu Snan sits

Abu Snan is a local council in the Galilee, in Israel’s Northern District, a religiously mixed town of Muslim, Druze and Christian residents numbering roughly 14,500, according to reference data drawn from the Central Bureau of Statistics. It lies in the part of the country that carries the heaviest share of Israel’s Arab-sector homicides: the northern region accounted for 57 per cent of such killings across 2025, The Times of Israel reported from the Abraham Initiatives’ end-of-year figures.

The count that follows these killings

The Abraham Initiatives has become the standard reference for the scale of homicide in Israel’s Arab communities, largely because it publishes a tally that runs through the year. At the time of this killing, the 149 deaths it had recorded followed 230 murders in the Arab sector in 2024 and a then-record 244 in 2023, itself more than double the 120 recorded in 2022.

The year did not improve. The organisation’s annual report, covered by The Jerusalem Post in December 2025, counted 252 Arab citizens killed in 218 separate incidents, the deadliest year on record for the community. About 88 per cent were shot dead, and 23 of the victims were women, the highest number the organisation had logged. More than 72 per cent of those killed were aged between 18 and 40.

The surge has been attributed to organised crime groups fighting over territory and eliminating rivals. Arab criminal organisations in Israel have been linked to extortion, money laundering and trafficking in weapons, drugs and women. Critics argue the crime wave has worsened since Itamar Ben-Gvir, a far-right politician, became national security minister in 2022.

How rarely these cases are solved

The clearance rate is the number that keeps the issue alive. Police solved about 10 per cent of homicides in Arab communities across 2025, the Abraham Initiatives found. By mid-2026 the figure had reached 12 per cent, The Times of Israel reported, with 147 Arab citizens and Palestinian residents killed in the first half of that year, a 15 per cent increase on the same period a year earlier.

What the police did not say

The police described the motive only as “likely criminal” and did not explain what that meant in this case. The statement did not say whether the detention of the eight relatives led to any charges, did not name a suspect, and gave no time of death. It also did not say whether the killing was linked to any of the organised crime networks blamed for the wider wave.
