Netanyahu Mourns Maglan Fighter Adam Tsarfati, Killed in Lebanon

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife sent condolences to the family of Sergeant Adam Tsarfati, a fighter in the Maglan unit, who fell in southern Lebanon. In the message, published on 1 June 2026, the prime minister said Tsarfati had fought with courage to protect Israel's cities and communities against the Hezbollah terrorist organisation, shared the family's sorrow and prayed for the full recovery of those wounded in what he called a difficult incident.

The message was a statement of mourning, not a military account. It did not say how or exactly where Tsarfati was killed, how many others were hurt, or what operation his unit was engaged in. Netanyahu closed by saluting soldiers deployed in the field and saying they would continue until the mission was completed.

The unit he served in

Maglan is one of the IDF's special forces units, founded in 1986 and kept classified until 2006. It specialises in operating deep behind enemy lines using advanced weapons systems, and in special reconnaissance and anti-armour work; it belongs to the Commando Brigade, and its recruits complete basic training with the Paratroopers before moving to the unit's own course, according to Wikipedia. Israeli reporting during the current war routinely identifies its soldiers as belonging to the Commando Brigade's Maglan unit; The Times of Israel used that formulation on 20 June 2026 in naming another soldier of the unit killed in southern Lebanon.

The fighting in southern Lebanon

Israel began what it described as limited and targeted ground operations against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon on 16 March 2026, moving on strongholds including Khiam on high ground near the border; Defence Minister Israel Katz said the objective was to eliminate threats and protect residents of the Galilee and the north, Al Jazeera reported, which also recorded large-scale displacement and civilian deaths in Lebanon from Israeli strikes.

By May the army was operating well beyond the border. Troops led by the Golani Brigade's reconnaissance unit crossed the Litani River near Zawtar al-Sharqiyah, about 10 kilometres inside Lebanon, in a week-long raid to destroy tunnels, weapons stores and launchers before pulling back, The Times of Israel reported on 12 May 2026. Through June, troops inside the Israeli-declared security zone continued demolishing Hezbollah positions while coming under rocket and explosive-drone attack. On 20 June the army was working to destroy Hezbollah infrastructure at the Ali Taher ridge, and a barrage of rockets and an explosive drone struck a military position in the Nabatieh-area village of Kfar Tebnit, The Times of Israel reported.

What is still unclear

The prime minister's message did not give Tsarfati's age, home town or the date of the incident, and it did not say what happened. It referred to wounded soldiers without saying how many or how seriously. Whether the IDF was investigating the incident, and what it later published about it, was not part of the statement.
