Two Hurt in a Shooting at the Kochav Yair Petrol Station

Israel Police reported a shooting at a petrol station in Kochav Yair, in central Israel, with two injured people of varying degrees of injury at the scene. Large forces from the Central District were present and engaged in evidence collection, the notice said, and the circumstances of the incident were under investigation. The notice was issued at about 11am on 7 June 2026.

Police said nothing else. The notice gave no ages, no account of what had happened, no description of a gunman and no indication of whether anyone had been detained. It was the kind of message a police spokesperson issues in the first minutes of an incident, before the facts are established.

Where this happened

Kokhav Ya'ir–Tsur Yig'al is a town of about 9,000 residents in Israel's Central District, roughly seven kilometres north-north-east of Kfar Saba and about a kilometre from the Palestinian city of Qalqilya, according to Wikipedia. It sits close to the line separating Israel from the West Bank, in a stretch of country where Israeli towns, Arab Israeli cities and Palestinian ones are within a few minutes' drive of one another.

The Central District is one of the Israel Police's territorial commands, covering the towns and cities of the coastal plain inland of Tel Aviv. The reference in the notice to forces engaged in collection is police shorthand for the forensic work that follows a shooting: sealing the ground, recovering cartridge cases and pulling closed-circuit footage from the forecourt and the road.

The wider run of gun crime

Shootings in Israel are most often reported in the context of a homicide wave that has climbed steeply over several years. Killings recorded in Arab communities rose from 74 in 2018 to more than 100 by 2022 and 252 in 2025, and the opening weeks of 2026 brought 35 killings in 36 days, The Media Line reported in February 2026, putting the homicide rate in Arab society at roughly 11.7 per 100,000 against an OECD average of 3.1. Nothing in the police notice places this incident in that category; the point is that a first report of a shooting in Israel does not, on its own, tell a reader what kind of case it is.

What was reported later that day

The police notice quoted here is an early one and should be read as such. Later the same day The Times of Israel reported a shooting attack in the area that began at a petrol station near Kochav Ya'ir and continued at Tzur Yitzhak, Tzur Natan and the West Bank settlement of Sal'it, in which one man was killed and five people were wounded, and in which security forces shot the attacker dead at around 11.03am. The Israel Police did not characterise the incident in the notice reproduced above, and did not link the sites.

On 2 July 2026 police announced indictments at the Lod District Court against three men accused of assisting the attacker, one of them alleged to have supplied the improvised Carlo submachine gun used; the case was investigated by the Sharon District Police together with the Shin Bet security service, and The Times of Israel reported the charges the same day.

What is still unclear

The police notice did not say who was hurt, how badly beyond varying degrees, or whether the two people at the forecourt were later among the casualties described in subsequent reporting. It did not identify a suspect, describe a weapon, or say whether the shooting was being treated as criminal or nationalistic. It also did not say when the shooting occurred, only when the report reached police.
