Netanyahu Mourns Sergeant Rotem Yanai, Killed Near the Northern Border

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a condolence message for Sergeant Rotem Yanai, who he said fell near Israel's northern border. Yanai came from Giv'at Ada and served as a welfare non-commissioned officer in the Givati Brigade, according to the statement, which was published on 28 May 2026.

"She always acted with dedication, sensitivity, and endless care for the soldiers of the battalion," the message said. "Her spirit of giving will be etched in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her and serving alongside her." Netanyahu, writing with his wife, said that on behalf of Israel's citizens they embraced Yanai's family, and prayed for the recovery of those wounded in what he called the difficult incident. The statement did not describe the incident itself.

What a welfare NCO actually does

The role Netanyahu named, known in Hebrew as a mashakit tash, is a service-conditions NCO: the soldier a unit turns to over money trouble, family crises, housing and the particular problems of lone soldiers who have no family in the country. A guide to women's service in the Israeli military describes the post as handling accommodation and welfare questions for soldiers, one of a family of NCO jobs covering education, language and administration. The same guide records that women make up about a third of those who join the IDF and that 92 per cent of its units have positions open to them.

It is a job defined by proximity to other people's difficulties, which is what the prime minister's language about care for "the soldiers of the battalion" points at.

The Givati Brigade and Giv'at Ada

Givati is one of the Israeli army's regular infantry brigades. It was first raised in 1947, disbanded after the 1956 Sinai campaign and re-formed in June 1983 following the First Lebanon War. It carries out routine security duties and is the IDF's designated amphibious infantry force, trained for landings from the sea.

Giv'at Ada, Yanai's home, is a small community founded in 1903 in the Haifa District of northern Israel. Since 2003 it has been administered jointly with neighbouring Binyamina as a single local authority, which had about 15,500 residents in 2024.

The northern border in 2026

Israel's northern frontier had been an active front for months by the time the message was published. The IDF announced ground operations in southern Lebanon in March 2026, as Al Jazeera reported, and on 31 March the Times of Israel put the Israeli military toll at ten soldiers killed there. The line Israeli forces crossed is not an international boundary: the United Nations is explicit that the Blue Line is a withdrawal line, drawn in 2000 to confirm Israel's pull-out from Lebanon, and that no agreed border between the two states exists.

What the statement does not say

The prime minister's message did not say what happened, where exactly it happened, when, how many others were hurt, or whether the incident was under investigation. It did not give Yanai's age or her unit within the brigade.
