Rabbi Amos Guetta Stabbed at Home, Suspect Arrested in Netanya

A rabbi was stabbed at his home in the Israeli coastal city of Netanya and later died, and a man has since been arrested, according to the Israel Police statement on the case. The force named the victim as Rabbi Amos Guetta and said he had been evacuated in critical condition to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Officers from the Netanya station, under the command of the station commander, went to the scene, opened an investigation and mounted what the police described as extensive searches for the suspect. The commander of the Central District, Superintendent Amir Cohen, held a situation assessment at the scene and handed the case to the Sharon District Detective Unit. Following a manhunt, the suspect was arrested in central Netanya at around 05:40 by detectives from the Netanya station together with officers from the Sharon region. Police described him only as a Netanya resident in his twenties and said he had been taken in for questioning on suspicion of murder. An initial investigation, the statement said, indicated that the man had arrived at the rabbi’s home, stabbed him and fled the scene, and that he was suspected of frequenting the rabbi’s yeshiva, a Jewish religious seminary where students study rabbinic texts. The investigation was continuing.

Why the case moved up a level within hours

Israel has a single national police force rather than the city-by-city departments familiar to readers in the United States or Britain. The Israel Police has roughly 35,000 people on its payroll, supported by tens of thousands of Civil Guard volunteers, and is organised into six regional districts alongside specialist national units, according to a public overview of the force. Netanya falls inside the Central District, one of those six commands. The same name is used for one of Israel’s administrative districts, which is divided into four sub-districts including HaSharon (the Sharon plain that gives the detective unit in this case its name), and which contains Netanya.

That structure explains the sequence in the police statement. The first response came from the local Netanya station; within hours the district commander had transferred the file to the Sharon district detective unit, a level above the station, while station detectives stayed on the street work that produced the arrest.

Netanya, a city of a quarter of a million on the Mediterranean

Netanya sits on Israel’s Mediterranean coast about 30 kilometres (20 miles) north of Tel Aviv and 56 kilometres south of Haifa. It had roughly 235,000 residents as of 2024, making it the country’s seventh-largest city, and it is known both as a beach resort with some 14 kilometres of shoreline and as a city of immigrant communities: large Russian-speaking and French-Jewish populations, the biggest Ethiopian-Israeli community in the country, and the Sanz Hasidic community centred on the Kiryat Sanz neighbourhood, according to the city’s demographic profile. It is a large, dense and religiously mixed city, which is why the police release paired the criminal investigation with an immediate concern about crowd management at the funeral.

What the police statement did not say

The statement did not name the suspect, give his age beyond the decade, describe any motive, or say whether he was known to police before this. It said he was suspected of frequenting the rabbi’s yeshiva but did not describe any relationship between the two men. Nothing was said about a weapon being recovered, about whether anyone else was present at the house, or about when the suspect would be brought before a court. Under Israeli practice an arrest on suspicion of murder is not a charge; a formal indictment, if it comes, follows later and can differ from the initial suspicion.
