Trump Says It 'May Have Been a Historic Day' as a Truce Begins

President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social: "May have been a historic day for Lebanon. Good things are happening!!! President DJT". The post was carried on 17 April 2026.

Trump did not say in the post what he was referring to, and it contained no detail beyond that one line. It arrived, however, at a specific moment in the diplomacy his own administration was running between Israel and Lebanon.

What was happening in Lebanon that day

A United States-brokered cessation of hostilities between Israel and Lebanon took effect on 17 April 2026, an initial ten-day pause that followed calls between Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun. It was the first direct diplomatic engagement between the two states in decades. Trump declared on social media at the time: "Both sides want to see PEACE, and I believe that will happen, quickly."

The reaction on the ground was mixed. Residents in Lebanon celebrated with gunfire at midnight, PBS reported, while many felt exposed given how much latitude the deal left Israel; Netanyahu said Israeli troops would not withdraw and would hold a ten-kilometre security zone in southern Lebanon, and Hezbollah, which was not a party to the agreement, said Israeli occupation of Lebanese land gave Lebanon's people the right to resist it.

What happened to the pause afterwards

The ten days did not end the matter. The Council on Foreign Relations recorded that on 23 April Trump announced a three-week extension after talks at the White House with the Israeli and Lebanese ambassadors, with Washington pledging to help Beirut protect itself from Hezbollah, and that a senior Hezbollah official said the group would not respect decisions taken there. Further extensions followed, including a 45-day continuation agreed on 15 May 2026, alongside repeated Hezbollah rejections of proposed frameworks.

Why a social media post counts as a statement

Truth Social launched in 2022, owned by Trump Media and Technology Group, as Britannica records, built as an alternative to Twitter after Trump's bans from mainstream platforms; the company went public in March 2024 and Trump is its majority shareholder. Trump did not name the ceasefire, or anything else, as the subject of the post. He set out no terms, no parties and no next step, and the phrasing, "may have been", is hedged.
