Police Investigate a Beach Attack on Two Minors in Ashkelon

Israel Police opened an investigation into a violent incident on the beach at Ashkelon, in which several teenagers attacked two minors during the afternoon, according to a police statement published on 17 April 2026. The force said it acted on receiving the report.

Additional suspects were questioned on suspicion of involvement in the incident, the statement said, and the investigation is continuing. Police released no names, no ages and no account of injuries, and no charges were announced.

Where this happened

Ashkelon is a coastal city in southern Israel, about 19 kilometres north of Gaza on the Mediterranean, built on and beside a site inhabited since around 2000 BCE. The modern city was rebuilt from 1950 after the 1948 to 1949 war and now works as both an industrial centre and a seaside resort, with hotels and campgrounds along its beaches. Its population was around 153,000 as of 2022. Those beaches are the city's main public space, which is the setting the police statement describes.

Youth violence has been climbing in Israel

Cases like this are being opened more often. Criminal files were opened against 6,821 teenagers of high-school age, up to 19, in the 2024 to 2025 school year, against 5,409 the year before, a rise of 26 per cent, according to Knesset Research and Information Center data reported by Ynet. The total number of offences rose about 22 per cent to roughly 21,500. Public-order offences made up about 36 per cent of cases involving teenage suspects, property crime 22 per cent and violent offences 18 per cent. Over a longer run the severity has shifted: minors suspected of offences involving loss of life rose from 44 in 2019 to 109 in 2024.

Prosecutors handling juvenile files describe the same trend from the inside. In a 2026 Ynet report they said the age of offenders was falling while the seriousness of cases rose, that knife-carrying had become commonplace among teenagers, and that social media was being used to organise group attacks. They pointed to pandemic disruption, years of war and underfunded welfare services as causes, and described a policy of routing juvenile cases to specially trained prosecutors who must weigh rehabilitation against accountability.

Israeli law treats suspects under 18 differently from adults, with rehabilitation written into its youth legislation, which is one reason police statements about incidents involving minors are as spare as this one.

What the police did not say

The statement did not say how many teenagers took part, how old any of them were, how badly the two minors were hurt, or whether anyone was arrested rather than questioned. It gave no motive and did not say whether the groups knew each other. No one involved is named here, and Israel.com has not independently established what happened on the beach.
