IDF Says Ceasefire Violators Approached Its Troops at the Blue Line

Israeli forces operating south of the Blue Line in southern Lebanon identified people the military described as terrorists who had violated the ceasefire understandings and approached the troops from north of the line, the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement on 18 April 2026, referring to the previous 24 hours.

Accordingly, the statement said, the IDF is authorised to take the measures necessary for self-defence against threats while maintaining the security of Israeli citizens and of the forces deployed in the field. "Actions for self-defense and threat removal are not limited by the ceasefire," it said, adding that the military would not allow Israeli citizens or its combatants to be endangered and would continue operating to clear the area under its control of any threat.

The line the statement is drawn around

The Blue Line is not a border. UNIFIL, the United Nations force in Lebanon, states that no agreed border between Lebanon and Israel exists, and that the Blue Line was identified in 2000 as a line of withdrawal, to confirm that Israeli forces had left Lebanon as required by Security Council resolution 425. UNIFIL keeps more than 10,000 peacekeepers from about 50 countries across an area of roughly 1,060 square kilometres, with a maritime task force offshore.

That is why the statement's geography matters: Israeli troops were described as operating south of the line, on the Lebanese side of a UN-drawn marker rather than inside Israel, with the people they identified approaching from the north.

A truce that was one day old

The ceasefire the statement refers to had only just begun. A United States-brokered cessation of hostilities took effect on 17 April 2026 for an initial ten days, following the first direct talks between Israel and Lebanon in decades. Netanyahu said Israeli troops would not withdraw and would hold a ten-kilometre security zone in southern Lebanon; Lebanese residents celebrated at midnight while noting that Israel retained freedom to strike.

The self-defence carve-out is not an Israeli invention layered on afterwards. It is written into the arrangements: the terms of the April 2026 cessation preserved Israel's stated right to act in self-defence against threats it judged imminent or ongoing, and Hezbollah was not a signatory to the deal. The earlier November 2024 ceasefire text likewise recorded that both parties retained the inherent right of self-defence consistent with international law. The truce was subsequently extended, by three weeks on 23 April 2026.

What the statement does not say

The IDF did not say how many people were identified, whether Israeli forces opened fire, whether anyone was killed or wounded, or where along the line this happened. It offered no evidence for the characterisation of those approaching, and it did not say whether the incident was reported to the ceasefire monitoring mechanism. No Lebanese or Hezbollah account is contained in the statement, and Israel.com has not independently verified the episode.
