Hezbollah sends two explosive drones at Israeli troops on Ali al-Taher Ridge

Israeli troops operating on the Ali al-Taher Ridge in southern Lebanon were targeted overnight by two explosive drones launched by Hezbollah, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said. According to the military, soldiers on the ground opened fire and brought down one of the drones, and no Israeli soldiers were wounded in the attack.

In a statement issued by the IDF spokesperson, the military said it responded by striking what it described as Hezbollah terror infrastructure in the area of Nabatieh in southern Lebanon. A separate posting by the IDF said the targeted sites were used to plan and direct attacks on Israeli civilians and on soldiers in what the military calls the Security Zone, and that the strikes were carried out to remove what it termed an immediate threat.

Where the Ali al-Taher Ridge is

The Ali al-Taher Ridge sits in the Nabatieh area of southern Lebanon. Nabatieh is one of the main population centres of the region, north of the border area with Israel, and gives its name to the surrounding district. Both the drone launch and the Israeli retaliatory strikes described by the military took place in that same general area, rather than across a wider front.

Emanuel Fabian, the military correspondent for The Times of Israel, reported that Hezbollah maintains a major underground facility beneath the ridge, and that the IDF believes a number of the group's operatives remain inside it. That detail does not appear in the statements published by the IDF itself, and no figure for how many operatives are thought to be there was given.

What the IDF means by the Security Zone

The phrase "Security Zone" is used by the Israeli military in its own statements to describe the area in southern Lebanon in which its soldiers are operating and which it says it is protecting against attacks on Israeli civilians. The reports on this incident do not set out the boundaries of that area, how long Israeli forces have been positioned there, or under what arrangement. Readers outside Israel should treat the term as the military's own designation rather than an internationally agreed one.

Hezbollah and drone attacks

Hezbollah is a Lebanese Shiite armed movement and political party that Israel, along with a number of other governments, designates a terrorist organisation. There is no substantive contradiction between the accounts. The one point of variation is descriptive: the IDF statement refers to the location as the Ali al-Taher Ridge while some reporting uses the shorter form Ali Taher.

What the reports do not say

No statement from Hezbollah appears in the material, so the group has not been recorded claiming or denying the launch. There is no information on Lebanese casualties or damage from the Israeli strikes, no count of how many sites were hit, and no description of what the struck infrastructure physically consisted of. The reports also do not say what became of the second drone, whether the Lebanese armed forces or the UN peacekeeping mission in the area responded, or whether any wider escalation followed.
