A Wounded Brigade Commander Writes to His Troops From Hospital

Colonel Meir Biderman, commander of the Israel Defense Forces' 401st Brigade, wrote to the soldiers under his command from a hospital bed to tell them he was recovering. "I was taken from you by storm last week, but know that I am fine, recovering, and getting stronger," the message said. It was released on 29 May 2026.

Biderman treated his own injury as an ordinary hazard of the job. "Injury is part of the life of a combat soldier fighting for the security of the country," he wrote. He then addressed losses among his units directly: "I know you continue to fight with strength and that you have gone through difficult days with casualties in Battalion 601 and Battalion 9. I strengthen you, embrace you, and am with you in spirit, and know that I am already waiting to rejoin you on the battlefield." The message did not say where, when or how he was wounded, or how badly.

Iron Tracks: the armoured brigade behind the letter

The 401st is an armoured brigade, one of the standing formations of the Israeli Armored Corps, and it carries the nickname Ikvot HaBarzel, or Iron Tracks. The Jewish Virtual Library places it inside the 162nd Division and records that its ageing Magach tanks were replaced with Merkava Mk 4s in 2004 and 2005. Reference accounts of the brigade date its founding to 1966 and list service in the War of Attrition, the Yom Kippur War, the 1982 and 2006 Lebanon wars, the Second Intifada and successive Gaza campaigns.

Armoured brigades of this type are built from a handful of subordinate battalions, and Biderman's message singles out two of them by number. Neither the message nor the accompanying statement described what those battalions do, where they were operating, or what happened to them.

A message sent in a year of Israeli losses

The letter reached soldiers during a period when the Israeli military was taking casualties on more than one front. In March 2026 the IDF announced what it called limited and targeted ground operations in southern Lebanon, with Defence Minister Israel Katz saying the aim was to "eliminate threats and protect the residents of the Galilee and the North", Al Jazeera reported. By the end of that month the Times of Israel reported that ten Israeli soldiers had been killed in southern Lebanon since the ground offensive began, alongside civilian deaths from rocket fire in northern Israel.

Nothing in Biderman's message tied his injury, or the casualties he mentioned, to any particular front. Israeli commanders publishing messages of this kind are addressing their own units first and the wider public second, and the text released to the press was short.

What the message does not say

The statement gave no date or place for the incident in which Biderman was hurt, no description of his injuries beyond his own assurance that he was "fine", and no timetable for his return to duty. It did not say who was commanding the brigade in his absence. It also did not say how many soldiers of Battalion 601 and Battalion 9 were killed or wounded, or when, and Israel.com has not independently established those figures.
