Soldier sentenced to 5 years for contacting foreign agent and providing missile interception videos to Iran.

Following the incident, a joint investigation was opened by the Special Investigations Unit of the Military Police Investigator, Lahav 433, and the Shin Bet, which culminated in an indictment. The defendant was convicted of receiving messages on his Telegram account during 2025 from various entities, some of which were identified with Iran, including various job offers. The defendant also received a message from an Iranian foreign agent who asked the defendant if he would like to earn money for various filming tasks. Subsequently, the defendant sent the Iranian foreign agent two videos showing missile interceptions, which he filmed during Operation “Iron Swords” in civilian locations, and received payment for one of them. In addition, the defendant sent the Iranian foreign agent several videos from civilian locations, including a video documenting a missile strike that the defendant located on the internet. Finally, due to the pressure he felt, the defendant updated an official in his unit that he had been in contact with a foreign agent, and the next day was arrested by the General Security Service. As part of the sentencing arguments, the military prosecution requested that the defendant be sentenced to 7 years of actual imprisonment, along with additional punitive components, emphasizing the severity and risk inherent in the defendant’s actions, and the need for deterrence of the defendant and the public. The Military Court addressed in its verdict the severity of the offenses for which the defendant was convicted, the fact that the defendant is a soldier, and the prevailing state of war in the country. Alongside this, the Military Court gave weight to the fact that the defendant did not provide military information or information that came to him by virtue of his position, as well as the fact that the defendant was the one who terminated contact with the agent and immediately reported the contact to his commanders. The Military Court sentenced the defendant to 5 years of actual imprisonment, along with a suspended sentence, a fine of 1,000 NIS, and a demotion to the rank of Private. We remind that any contact with an enemy entity is prohibited by law. Security agencies will continue to operate to locate and thwart terrorist and espionage activities in Israel, and law enforcement agencies will continue to act to prosecute all those involved in this activity.
