New Program Initiated to Install Solar Power Systems on Public Housing Buildings
Israel's Ministries of Construction and Housing and Energy are installing solar power on public housing, starting with a pilot in Yeruham and Mitzpe Ramon.
Jerusalem, 20 May, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Israel’s Ministry of Construction and Housing and its Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure are working together on a new program to install solar power systems on the roofs of public housing buildings throughout the country.
The new program, say the ministries, will enable the installation of photovoltaic systems on the roofs of public housing buildings through a framework tender for solar installation companies. The move is intended to empower public housing residents, improve building maintenance, and generate additional sources of income for the welfare of residents.
The project will begin with a pilot in the Negev cities of Yeruham and Mitzpe Ramon, and will be the opening shot for a large-scale national initiative that will expand to additional cities and additional public housing residents, in cooperation with local authorities and community support for residents.
The program supports the goals of The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure within the framework of the “100,000 New Solar Roofs” program, on the way to achieving a target of 30% electricity production from renewable energies by 2030.
The move is expected to bring a series of social and economic benefits:
Reducing “energy poverty”, while improving thermal comfort in apartments. In addition, the electricity produced on the roof can be used for the building’s needs even in times of emergency and power outage.
Creating an additional source of income for the maintenance and renovation of the buildings.
A no-cost model for tenants, with developers bearing all costs.
Improving the quality of buildings by strengthening, sealing and upgrading roofs.
