Romania Signs $2.3 Billion Deal for Air Defense System Manufactured by Israels Rafael

Romania will acquire Israel's SPYDER air defense system in a $2.3 billion deal with Rafael, enhancing its national SHORAD-VSHORAD program.

Jerusalem, 28 June, 2026 (TPS-IL) — An agreement was signed between Romania’s Ministry of Defense and Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems for the purchase of the SPYDER system to defend against aerial threats. The deal part of a broad strategic agreement with an estimated value of over two billion Euros ($2.3 billion).

This is another choice by a NATO member state of the SPYDER system, positioning it as the European standard, said Rafael.

Last week, the first order was signed under the full framework agreement. Rafael was selected through a tender conducted in order to supply Romania with a large number of SPYDER air defense batteries—a significant step in the national SHORAD-VSHORAD program, whose goal is to strengthen the defense of Romania’s airspace.

The agreement is for the supply of the SPYDER system, including a full solution package with launchers, interceptors, radar systems, training systems, and logistical support.
