Jerusalem, 28 April, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Israeli police arrested five suspects and detained five others for questioning on Tuesday, including a sitting local council head in the country’s north, in a widening corruption investigation centered on alleged bribery and misuse of public funds.

The arrests followed a months-long undercover probe led by Lahav 433, Israel’s national unit for investigating serious crime and corruption. The inquiry focused on suspected offenses including bribery, fraud, breach of trust, money laundering, and violations of tax laws.

Evidence gathered during the covert phase points to “bribery ties between IT service providers and senior officials in several local authorities in the north of the country,” the police said. Investigators suspect that private companies offered benefits to public employees in exchange for securing municipal contracts and tenders.

Police allege the arrangement went beyond preferential treatment in bidding processes. “The investigation also shows that the parties acted together to fraudulently spend public funds,” the police said.

The case became public Tuesday morning when officers began arresting suspects and conducting coordinated searches at municipal offices across several northern communities.

The suspects are expected to be brought before the Rishon LeZion Magistrate’s Court later for hearings on extending their detention, as investigators continue to examine the scope of the alleged offenses.

The arrests come just months after another high-profile corruption case involving a northern municipality, where police uncovered suspected links between local officials, business figures, and an organized crime group. In that case, authorities alleged that large sums of money were funneled to criminal elements, contributing to severe financial strain on the city involved.
