Israel Moves Forward with Digital Currency Pegged to Shekel

Israel's Capital Market Authority has approved Bits of Gold to issue a shekel-pegged stable digital currency after a two-year pilot.

> 🇮🇱🇦🇷”>Jerusalem, 28 April, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Israel’s Capital Market, Insurance and Savings Authority has granted approval for the distribution of a stable digital currency pegged to the Shekel, to be issued by Bits of Gold, a company licensed to provide financial asset services (FASE).

The issuance will be carried out in a limited format and to a predetermined extent, under close supervision and in accordance with strict conditions intended to ensure the preservation of public funds and the stability of the activity. The approval was granted after a comprehensive review and pilot process that lasted about two years, during which the company’s capabilities and compliance with regulatory standards were examined. The currency is expected to enable the development of advanced financial services, while maintaining backup mechanisms and liquidity.

The approval was granted after a comprehensive review process that lasted about two years, in which the company held a dedicated pilot with the aim of examining the company’s capabilities in the field of issuing stable currencies and operating them in a safe, responsible and controlled manner prior to final approval.

During the pilot period, the company’s capabilities in the areas of issuing and managing a stable coin, safeguarding customer assets, managing custody risks, ongoing operations, business continuity, technology risks, information security and cyber protection, as well as compliance with strict regulatory standards set by the Capital Market Authority were tested.

The pilot took place in a regulatory environment known as a “sandbox,” and serves as a limited and controlled framework that allows for the preliminary examination of innovative financial products and services under regulatory supervision, while reducing risks to the public and the financial system.
