A new report by Israel’s State Comptroller reveals severe governmental failures in supporting residents of northern border communities displaced during the “Iron Swords” war. Over 60,000 people were evacuated, yet a comprehensive government response was only approved seven months later.
“The consequences of the northern front are unprecedented in scale and duration,” said the Comptroller Matanyahu Englman. “The government failed to provide the necessary response. This failure lies first and foremost with the Prime Minister’s Office and its former director-general, who did not fulfill their responsibilities under two government decisions. The evacuees deserved a better, more effective government response.”
According to the report, 54% of evacuees are considering not returning.
Findings point to widespread trauma, disruption to education, deteriorating livelihoods, and inadequate civil protection.
The comptroller warns that the lack of coordinated action and long-term planning may lead to permanent depopulation of Israel’s northern frontier.
