Jerusalem, 30 June, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Israel’s Ministry of Transportation and Road Safety is testing for the first time an intelligent system based on artificial intelligence (AI) for automatically verifying the number of passengers in a vehicle, without the need to stop at human checkpoints.

The system is expected to allow for more continuous and faster path switching and improve the user experience.

The technology being tested is based on a dedicated application installed on the driver’s mobile device. The app performs smart scanning of vehicle passengers using the phone’s camera and advanced artificial intelligence algorithms, capable of identifying and verifying the number of passengers in the vehicle, detecting fraud attempts, and cross-referencing between trip start and end data.

Currently, obtaining a toll exemption on the expressway requires stopping for a physical count of passengers. The innovative solution currently being tested will enable automatic verification of vehicle occupancy and continuous driving without stopping in the future, while maintaining a high level of reliability and effective enforcement capability.
