Jerusalem, 11 June, 2026 (TPS-IL) — The government of Israel has approved a large-scale transportation investment plan for the north of the country, approximately a quarter of a billion Shekels ($84 million) for roads, public transportation, and regional connectivity. This is in addition to billions of Shekels appropriated for an overall improvement plan for northern infrastructure.
The plan, said the National Transportation Authority, is designed to “improve accessibility and connectivity between northern communities, strengthen public transportation, expand central routes, and support the region’s economic and demographic growth.”
In the city of Safed, the Independence Road project, Highway 8678, will be completed by 2028, with an investment of 45 million Shekels. At the same time, early planning will be promoted for the expansion of Highway 768 in the Tiberias-Safed area to a two-lane, two-lane highway, with an investment of 5 million Shekels.
In Acre, the early planning of the Acre East Integrated Transportation Center will be completed, at the intersection of Highways 4 and 85, with an investment of 10 million Shekels during the years 2026-2027. In addition, 5 million Shekels will be allocated for the planning and construction of supporting transportation infrastructure, to improve accessibility to existing and planned mass transit stations throughout the district.
