Defense Minister Israel Katz Decides to Appoint Gil Reich Appointed New Head of the Defense Security Directorate at Israel’s Defense Ministry

Gil Reich has been appointed the new Head of the Defense Security Directorate at Israel's Defense Ministry, a decision unanimously approved by the government.

Jerusalem, 10 March, 2026 (TPS-IL) — The government of Israel today (Tuesday) unanimously approved the decision of Defense Minister Israel Katz to appoint Gil Reich as the Head of the Defense Security Directorate at the Defense Ministry. The appointment was made on the recommendation of a search committee, headed by the Director General of the Defense Ministry, Maj. Gen. (Res.) Amir Baram.

Gil Reich currently serves as the acting National Security advisor and head of the National Security Council. Previously, he served for three decades in a variety of positions in the defense establishment, including Deputy Director for Policy and Strategy at the Atomic Energy Commission and as Deputy Head of the National Security Council.

Reich will replace Brigadier General (res.), Yuval Shimoni, who has served as head of the National Security Council for the past five years.
