Jerusalem, 16 March, 2026 (TPS-IL) — For the first time in Israel, electric garbage trucks will operate in Jerusalem. The move, supported by the Ministry of Environmental Protection, is expected to reduce air Pollution and noise in the heart of neighborhoods.

A ceremony was held today, March 16, for the introduction of five new electric garbage trucks in the city of Jerusalem. The trucks were purchased by the Jerusalem Municipality with the support of The Ministry of Environmental Protection, which provided funding of approximately two million shekels ($640,000 – 400,000 shekels per truck).

Garbage trucks operate every day in the heart of residential areas, on stop-and-go routes with frequent stops and starts, a pattern of operation in which diesel engines produce significant emissions of air pollutants and noise nuisances for residents. In contrast, electric trucks operate quietly, do not emit pollutants during travel, and take advantage of the frequent stops for regenerative braking (braking that returns energy to the battery) that optimizes energy consumption and enables efficient operation on fixed routes.
