Petition Filed Against Economy Minister Claiming Election Laws Violations Rejected
A petition against Economy Minister Nir Barkat claiming election law violations regarding his "State Basket" plan has been rejected by the Central Elections.
Jerusalem, 12 May, 2026 (TPS-IL) — A petition against Economy Minister Nir Barkat for publishing the “State Basket” plan was summarily rejected.
The petitioner, attorney and CPA Yaron Meiri, filed a petition against the Minister of Economy and Industry, Nir Barkat, and the Likud party, demanding an injunction against publications on the minister’s social media.
Meiri claimed that videos published by the minister on his personal accounts, which promote the “state basket” reform and include documentation of visits to the “Carrefour” shopping chain, constitute prohibited election propaganda and improper use of public assets. According to the petitioner, the publications were made with public funding and while misleading consumers.
The Chairman of the Central Elections Committee, Deputy President of the Supreme Court, Justice Noam Solberg, rejected the petition out of hand without the need to receive a response from the respondents.
