Following the extension of compulsory service to 32 months – all questions and answers

Due to operational needs, and following the decision of the government and the Knesset, it has been decided to extend the mandatory service period to 32 months for all men and women serving in roles defined as ‘woman treated as man’.

Attached is a letter from the Head of the Manpower Directorate, Major General Dadi Bar Kalifa, regarding the extension of mandatory service, alongside the IDF’s continued commitment to fulfilling its missions and to the care, treatment, and appreciation of its service members.

Who is affected by the change?

All male soldiers, and all women serving in roles defined as ‘woman treated as man’, who enlisted from July 2024 and whose service period is 30 months, and those enlisting until the end of June 2029.

Why is the service being extended?

The extension of the mandatory service period is a necessary operational security requirement to enable the IDF to meet its missions.

Will the extension of mandatory service apply to those serving in a ‘woman treated as man’ role?

Yes. Women performing roles for which they signed the ‘woman treated as man’ form will have their service period extended to 32 months of mandatory service, in accordance with men.

When will my discharge date be updated?

The change is expected to appear in the information systems by the end of September.

Will I receive a unique compensation due to the service extension? If so, when?

The unique compensation will be paid for the 31st and 32nd months for those who enlisted for a service period of 30 months and enlisted from 01.07.2024 up to 30.06.2025.

What is the amount of compensation for those eligible?

Those whose enlistment date to the IDF falls between 01.07.2024 and 30.06.2025 will be entitled to double the basic living allowance for the 31st and 32nd months of their service. Those whose enlistment date to the IDF falls between 01.07.2025 and 30.06.2026 will be entitled to the basic living allowance, multiplied by 1.75.

I am a regular service officer and enlisted for 30 months, will my mandatory service period be extended?

Yes. The extension of the mandatory service period also applies to male regular service officers and female regular service officers who, due to their role, signed the ‘woman treated as man’ form.

I am a mandatory service officer, will this affect my entry into permanent service?

Possibly. Your entry date into permanent service may change, as may your discharge date. The duration of the contract is calculated based on the discharge date and the qualification date. Please contact your unit’s Manpower department for further details regarding your entry into permanent service and the updated discharge date.

If my mandatory service period is shorter than 30 months, does the change apply to me?

If the mandatory service period you enlisted for is different from 30 months, please contact your unit’s Manpower department.
