Suspect Arrested in Attempted Assassination of Local Arab Politician
A suspect in his twenties was arrested for the attempted assassination of Jadeidi-Makr council head Suhail Melhem and his deputy in northern Israel.
Jerusalem, 18 May, 2026 (TPS-IL) — A suspect (a man from Jadeidi-Makr, in his twenties) was arrested for involvement in the attempted assassination of Jadeidi-Makr council head Suhail Melhem and his deputy, who were shot after leaving a wedding in northern Israel. The attack, carried out late Sunday night, left both men seriously injured and renewed concerns over escalating violence targeting public officials in Arab communities.
Jadeidi-Makr is an Arab community located near Israel’s northwest coast, just a few kilometers east of Acre.
Israel’s National Police Commissioner: “Our message to all lawbreakers is clear and unequivocal: “We will act with an iron fist and determination against anyone who chooses to harm civilians and elected officials, and against anyone who attempts to threaten the rule of law wherever and whenever required.”
