New National System for Mapping Permitted Speeds on Highways

New national system launched by Israel Highway Patrol for mapping permitted speeds on highways, aimed at enhancing road safety and reducing accidents.

TPSBreaking News

Jerusalem, 22 July, 2025 (TPS-IL) — The Israel Highway Patrol launched a national specification for the mapping of highest permitted speeds on the various highways in Israel.

The new specification was built in accordance with the principles of the “safe system” approach, and aims to make a digital, reliable, and uniform information layer accessible to all parties operating in the field: infrastructure engineers, local authorities, the Israel Police, advanced vehicle systems, researchers, decision makers, and more.

The Director General of the Israeli Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Gilad (Gili) Cohen, emphasized that safe speeds are a critical component in preventing accidents and reducing the severity of injuries. The new specification will serve as an infrastructure for innovative applications such as ISA systems (Assistance in identifying permitted speeds), smart enforcement planning, vehicle fleet management, transportation monitoring, and safety studies.

“Permitted speeds are not just a regulatory matter – they are a direct expression of the way the state manages risks on the roads,” said Cohen. “Every component of the transportation system must be adapted to the human body’s ability to survive an accident. Therefore, precise planning of permitted speeds is a critical basis for safety.”
