Frequently asked questions

What is the Torah portion this week?+

This Shabbat, 24 October 2026, the reading everywhere is Parashat Lech-Lecha.

What is a parasha?+

The Torah is divided into 54 portions (parashiyot), read in sequence on Shabbat mornings so the whole Torah is completed once a year. In non-leap years some portions are doubled up so the cycle still finishes on time.

Why do Israel and the Diaspora sometimes read different portions?+

Festivals last one day in Israel and two in the Diaspora. When that extra Diaspora day lands on a Shabbat, Israel reads the next parasha while the Diaspora reads a festival portion, and the Diaspora then runs one week behind until a doubled portion brings the calendars back together.

When does the cycle start again?+

On Simchat Torah, when the last portion of Deuteronomy is read and the cycle immediately restarts with Bereshit, the first portion of Genesis.
