Massive Expansion Planned for Israel’s Largest Highway

Israel's Ministry of Transportation is investing 850 million Shekels to expand Highway 6 and upgrade the Daniel Interchange, enhancing connectivity.

Jerusalem, 19 March, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Israel’s Ministry of Transportation and Road Safety, through the Cross-Israel Company, has begun work to expand Highway 6 and upgrade the Daniel Interchange – one of the main bottlenecks in the national road network. The Ministry said this is one of the “largest and most significant transportation infrastructure projects in Israel,” with an investment of approximately 850 million Shekels ($272 million).

Highway 6, which connects Israel from north to south, is the country’s only toll road.

The project, promoted as part of the “Connecting Israel” vision led by Transportation Minister Miri Regev, constitutes another step in transforming Highway 6 into a “continuous, fast, and safe transportation artery that connects the regions of the country and strengthens the connection between the center, the periphery, and the Negev.”

As part of the project, an additional lane will be added in each direction of traffic between the Ben Shemen Interchange (central Israel) and the Sorek Interchange, for a length of approximately 40 kilometers, in order to address the heavy traffic loads and improve the flow of traffic on this central axis.
