Jerusalem, 8 June, 2026 (TPS-IL) — The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) expects fighting with Iran to continue for several more days and is preparing for the possibility of a prolonged campaign following Tehran’s violation of a reportedly two-month ceasefire, a senior military official briefing reporters said on Monday. U.S. President Donald Trump called for an end to the fighting.
“We are preparing as an army for several days of fighting and even for a longer period,” he said, emphasizing that Israel views the latest escalation as a continuation of the ongoing campaign rather than the start of a new round of hostilities.
According to the IDF, launched 22 Ballistic Missiles toward Israel overnight and into Monday morning. Most were intercepted or landed in open areas. In addition, Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen fired two ballistic missiles at Israel. One was intercepted while the other fell short before reaching Israeli territory.
The renewed missile fire prompted Israel to activate operational plans that had been prepared during the ceasefire period. The IDF said it carried out multiple waves of strikes in Iran in response.
Overnight, dozens of Israeli Air Force fighter jets struck nine air defense systems that Tehran had been restoring in western and central Iran. Later Monday, Israeli aircraft targeted a petrochemical complex and three factories involved in producing components for Iran’s ballistic missile program.
“Our actions are not acts of retaliation,” officials said. “We are at war. The goal is to continue to deeply harm the regime and inflict maximum damage on its capabilities.”
IDF Spokesperson Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin said Israel considers Iran’s missile launches a clear breach of the ceasefire.
“Iran allegedly connects the IDF strike in Dahieyh to its attack,” Defrin said. “It violated the two-month ceasefire yesterday with its fire toward Israel. This may indicate the Iranians’ inability to sign an agreement with the Americans, and to buy time they violated the ceasefire.”
Defrin was referring to an Israeli strike in Beirut’s Dahiyeh district that targeted what the military described as an apartment used by mid-level Hezbollah operatives. According to the IDF, two operatives were killed and nine people were wounded. The Dahiyeh area is a Hezbollah stronghold in southern Beirut.
The military said it is working to prevent Hezbollah from joining the fighting but is preparing for that possibility.
Israel also highlighted close coordination with the United States. Defrin said the offensive operations in Iran were conducted solely by Israel, while Washington assisted in defensive efforts.
“We coordinated with U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), also in defense,” Defrin said. “They took part in the interceptions yesterday.”
According to the IDF, Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir has spoken three times since Sunday with CENTCOM commander Adm. Brad Cooper as the two militaries continue joint assessments of the evolving situation.
Meanwhile, in a post on Truth Social on Monday, Trump wrote, “Israel and Iran must immediately stop ‘shooting.’”
