Israel Looks to Geothermal Energy for Electricity

Israel's Ministry of Energy is investigating geothermal energy, a clean and stable power source, following technological advancements in deep excavation.

Jerusalem, 20 April, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Israel’s Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure is examining for the first time the promotion of geothermal energy for electricity production in Israel.

The Ministry said this is a clean energy, produced using underground heat and that, according to forecasts, geothermal energy is expected to become a major energy source, following technological improvements that make deep excavation cheaper and simpler.

The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure is now promoting several steps, including collaborations with the US and Germany, to examine the integration of geothermal energy into the Israeli economy.

Today, geothermal energy is mainly produced from relatively shallow depths, but in the coming decades it is expected to become a significant energy source in the world with the advancement of new generation geothermal technologies that produce heat from the deep underground and due to improved and cheaper drilling technologies. A professional review prepared by the Ministry’s Chief Scientist Unit indicates that these innovative geothermal energy technologies may reach commercial maturity within 5-10 years, will enable continuous and stable electricity production throughout the day and will form the basis for the electricity supply in the economy.

In Light of a positive outlook for significant progress in geothermal technologies worldwide in the coming years, the Ministry is already working to create a knowledge base, regulatory infrastructure, and technological ecosystem that will enable integration into the rapid absorption and assimilation of these technologies in Israel, which will enable the future expansion of clean energy sources in the electricity sector.
