Customs busts 26 cigarette packs smuggling attempt

Ben Gurion Airport customs, in a joint operation, busted a 40-year-old Ramla resident attempting to smuggle 26 cigarette packs from an aircraft into Israel.
As part of a joint enforcement operation by the Special Detective Unit 747 of the Ben Gurion Airport area, investigators from the Customs Drug Unit at ben gurion Airport, and with the assistance of the Airport Authority’s Unit for the Prevention of Offenses, a suspect, a resident of Ramla in his 40s, was apprehended and caught with a commercial quantity of cigarette packs.
Yesterday, in the restricted areas of Terminal 3, customs investigators noticed an employee of a company that provides catering services to aircraft, lowering a suspicious bag from the aircraft’s door. The suspect was followed until he exited the restricted area, and as he was placing the suspicious bag into his private vehicle, he was apprehended by police forces.
During the inspection conducted by investigators from the Customs Drug Unit at ben gurion Airport, approximately 26 packs of cigarettes were found. The suspect was taken for questioning by customs investigators, and at its conclusion, he was brought for a hearing in court.
The Rishon LeZion Magistrate’s Court decided to release the suspect under restrictive conditions. The investigation is ongoing.
It should be noted that this is a serious incident in which a trusted employee has betrayed his duty and abused the authorization granted to him by virtue of his position.
