Internship Lottery Results for Graduates of International Medical Schools
Israel's Yatziv Reform places 489 graduates from recognized med schools in internships, a reversal of past trends, ensuring high standards for public.
The Yatziv Reform is designed to reorganize physician training in Israel by clearly defining uniform standards for medical education as a prerequisite for working in the public healthcare system.
In the lottery held today, 489 interns who graduated from recognized medical institutions were placed, compared with 310 interns who graduated from non-recognized institutions. This represents a reversal of the trend seen in previous years, when the number of graduates from non-recognized institutions was higher than that of graduates from recognized institutions. This shift reflects the impact of the reform, which aims to ensure that every physician entering Israel’s healthcare system has completed medical training that meets high professional and international standards in order to provide the public with high-quality and safe medical care.
The Yatziv Reform, which began in 2019, stipulates that only graduates of medical institutions approved by the Ministry of Health are eligible to take the licensing exams and work as physicians in Israel. Medical studies that began that year or later at non-recognized institutions are not recognized for licensing or internship purposes.
Alongside the implementation of the reform, the Ministry of Health has worked to expand recognized medical training pathways. As part of this effort, the number of medical students studying in Israel has increased from about 900 to more than 1,400. The target is to reach 1,700 students per year as part of strengthening Israel’s future medical workforce.
The lottery data also show that among graduates of recognized institutions, 73.82% were placed in their first-choice preference and 9.41% in their second-choice preference—figures that point to a stable and balanced placement process alongside the structural changes.
