Somaliland Invites Israel to Establish Presence in Strategic Red Sea Port
Somaliland has officially invited Israel to establish a presence in its Red Sea port city of Berbera, a key gateway to the Bab el-Mandeb strait.
Jerusalem, 12 March, 2026 (TPS-IL) — The African Horn nation of Somaliland invited Israel to set up a presence in the Red Sea port city of Berbera.
“Israel, you are invited to establish your presence at the Republic of Somaliland’s Berbera, gateway to the Bab el-Mandeb and the Red Sea,” said a tweet posted on the Somaliland government’s social media account.
Berbera sits on the Gulf of Aden directly across from Yemen. A potential military base there would enable Israel to threaten Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen.
Somaliland broke away from Somalia and declared its independence in 1991. Israel is the first and only country to recognize Somaliland.
