Prime Minister Netanyahu has approved the Beer Sheva-Likit light rail project, a significant investment to develop the Negev and support the IDF's move south.

Politics

Jerusalem, 13 May, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Prime Minister Netanyahu decided that a light rail (LRT) will be built on the Beer Sheva-Likit route after reviewing and updating the team’s recommendations and all of the planning, economic, and operational aspects detailed in them.

Prime Minister Netanyahu:

“This is great news for the capital of the Negev – Beersheba, for the residents of the region and for accelerating the IDF’s move south. We continue to develop the Negev, invest in infrastructure and enable young men and women to be part of the vision that is becoming a reality.”

The decision to build a light rail is part of a broad government decision to strengthen and develop the Beer Sheva metropolis to the tune of approximately one billion shekels. A decision that focuses on four key areas: economic growth, improving the quality of life and personal security, human capital education, and developing transportation infrastructure. The light rail on the Beer Sheva-Likit route will leverage the transportation infrastructure in the area and support the relocation of IDF camps to the Negev.
