Israeli Lawmakers Back Knesset Dissolution in Preliminary Vote

Israeli lawmakers have preliminarily voted 110-0 to dissolve the Knesset, potentially leading to early elections due to coalition disagreements.

Jerusalem, 20 May, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Israeli lawmakers gave preliminary approval to dissolve the Knesset on Wednesday, which would pave the way for the Early Elections. The bill, which passed the plenum by a vote of 110-0, has further legislative hurdles to clear.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who was reportedly holding security discussions, did not attend.

Regardless of the coalition’s status, general elections are required by October 27.

The governing coalition has been strained by its failure to pass controversial legislation enshrining conscription exemptions for Orthodox (Haredi) yeshiva students.
