Israel launched over 100 strikes on Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon after drone attacks on Metula and Shomera, with PM Netanyahu vowing escalation.

Jerusalem, 26 May, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Israel struck more than 100 Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon overnight, the Israel Defense Forces said Tuesday, following a series of escalating drone attacks by the Iran-backed Hezbollah terrorist organization.

According to the IDF, the strikes hit operatives, weapons depots, headquarters, observation posts, and other military infrastructure belonging to Hezbollah.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday that “Israel will intensify its operations in Lebanon,” following a series of recent attacks. On Sunday, an unmanned aerial vehicle struck a home in the border town of Metula, while another explosive drone damaged a school bus stop in the village of Shomera. An Israeli soldier was also killed in a Hezbollah suicide drone attack the same day.

Northern Israeli communities braced for the possibility of further escalation on Tuesday, with local authorities in several border towns ordering schools and kindergartens closed. Children in some communities remained at home as municipalities independently shifted students to distance learning, despite no formal directive from the Israel Defense Forces Home Front Command. National parks and nature reserves in Northern Israel were also closed.

A senior United States official said Monday that Washington may be prepared to support a broader Israeli military operation against Hezbollah, saying the group had ignored repeated warnings to halt attacks on Israel.

Since a U.S.-mediated ceasefire took effect on April 17, Hezbollah has launched more than 1,000 drones and 700 rockets toward Israel.
