Veterinary Services in the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security Publish Special Guidelines for Caring for Our Pets During the Emergency
The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has published guidelines for pet care during emergencies, emphasizing preparedness and identification for lost.
The Ministry emphasizes that pets are an integral PART OF THE family and should be allocated a place in the protected space, preparing for shared stay. Additionally, it is recommended that dogs or cats be microchipped and their details updated in the National Dog Registry so that they can be located quickly in case of loss.
During an alert, the pet should be placed in the protected space prepared according to the Home Front Command‘s guidelines. It is important to equip yourself in advance with a supply of water and food in appropriate containers, a short leash and muzzle, a suitable carrier even for large dogs, an absorbent mat and garbage bags, as well as regular medications if necessary. The carrier should be labeled with the owner’s name, address, phone number, pet’s name, chip number, and other identifying details.
During the stay in the protected space, maintain calmness and soothe the animal in ways familiar to it from routine, as pets are very sensitive to the stress of household members and may react accordingly. It is recommended to practice entering the protected space even before Alerts to create a positive habit and reduce anxiety. The use of tranquilizers is not recommended except after consultation with a veterinarian.
In case of a lost dog, you can contact the National Dog Registry through the Ministry’s hotline at *6016, and also to report a found dog. It is recommended to add a tag to the collar with the owner’s name and updated phone numbers in addition to microchipping. Small pets such as rodents and birds can be placed in the protected space within their cages, and it is recommended to cover the cage with breathable fabric to provide a sense of security.
The full guidelines are published on the Ministry’s website at: https://www.gov.il/he/pages/emergencyguidelines?chapterIndex=5. The Ministry calls on the public to prepare in advance and act responsibly to ensure the safety of pets even in times of emergency.
