Dozens of sheep died in a Hebron-area fire caused by an electrical fault in as-Samu, Israeli police confirmed, refuting claims of nationalist motive.

Jerusalem, 17 February, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Israeli Police said that a fire in a sheepfold in the Palestinian village of as-Samu in the Hebron region was caused by an electrical failure. Dozens of sheep were killed and Palestinian social media users blamed the fire on Jews.

“This is not an act with a criminal or nationalist background,” the police said.

“It was determined that this was a fire caused by an electrical failure that caused the tarpaulin sheets covering the sheepfold to catch fire and subsequently, the animals to burn,” the police said after investigators from the judea and samaria Fire and Rescue Department completed their preliminary examination.
