Barzilai University Medical Center Wins Government Innovation Competition for New Nephrology Tech

Jerusalem, 2 December, 2025 (TPS-IL) — Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology Gila Gamliel and Civil Service Commissioner Prof. Daniel Hershkowitz announced the winners of the 2025 Government Innovation Competition:

The first-place winner is Barzilai University Medical Center, which developed an innovative and groundbreaking system that dramatically shortens the queue for nephrology.

The system automatically calculates the risk of kidney disease progression, thus enabling accurate medical prioritization that shortened the waiting time for a second appointment to only 124 days without additional personnel. Based on the risk calculation, a senior nephrologist determines the urgency of the appointment, thus ensuring that critical patients receive treatment faster. The project constitutes an advanced model of data-based, personalized preventive medicine.

Minister Gamliel: “The real winners are the citizens of Israel, who, thanks to that innovation, are able to enjoy improved government service in a variety of areas. The ministry I lead will make innovation, science and technology accessible to every citizen, using them to reduce social gaps, and streamline the service provided to citizens by government ministries and authorities.”
