Expansion of Northern Highway Will Include Lanes for Light Rail
Israel's Highway 6 is expanding the Somech Interchange near Haifa, integrating future Nofit light rail passage with free private vehicle travel by 2029.
Jerusalem, 3 February, 2026 (TPS-IL) — The Ministry of Transportation and the Israel Highway Company have issued a tender for the upgrade and expansion of the Somech Interchange – to the east of Haifa – on Highway 6, Israel’s only toll road that travels down the middle of the country from north to south.
The upgraded interchange will allow for continuous, safe and fast passage of the “Nofit” light rail in the future, alongside free travel for private vehicles without stopping at traffic lights. The interchange is expected to open to traffic in 2029.
